With the footy season upon us, there’s no better time than now to instigate a blokes’ day out in Hahndorf for a little bit of bonding time.
The charismatic German town is the perfect spot to try your hand at devouring the metre-long hotdog or venturing the many breweries and cellar doors dotted around the joint. Trying the German beers is a must during your stay.
So round up the boys and head for the hills for that annual lads' trip because we’ve got the ultimate guide to a day in Hahndorf. Accommodation, activities, beers and most importantly the best spots for a good feed.
If your mates tend to be early risers, it’s a good idea to get in a solid brekkie to get you pumped for the days’ activities. We recommend exploring the options at Royal Copenhagen – that’s right, they do more than just ice cream. Voted the best full breakfast in town, those rashes of bacon and freshly cooked eggs are not something to miss.

Still a big kid at heart? We’ve got good news for you! Mini golf at Hahndorf is for all kids big and small and only costs $6 to try your hand and mastering a hole in one. Put your putt putt skills to the test across the 18-hole course and challenge the boys to winner takes all. And by that we mean winner gets a beer bought for him at the next stop.

We recommend venturing along Hahndorf’s Main Street and stopping in at Otto’s Bakery for a caffeine hit and tasty baked goods. We hear their vanilla slice is mighty fine but you might want to save that one for treat later on in the day unless you’re needing that sugar kick to keep things going, that is.

Give your tastebuds a tickle with some handcrafted boutique beers at Gulf Brewery on Main Street. Featuring a wide range of beers from a crisp, refreshing lager to smooth, dark chocolate stout, no doubt you’ll find one you can’t get enough of. And if you just want to try them all they offer two tasting paddles: the 6 beer paddle for $10 of your choice of 330ml beers from the list, or the 10 beer paddle for $14 and consists of 550ml of each of the beers they have on offer. If you’re planning on a big boys’ day, we recommend booking in for groups as they do get pretty busy!

Always wondered if you could devour a metre-long hotdog? Now is your chance. The Hahndorf Inn’s Giant Hotdog is the biggest and most expensive in (probably) all of Australia. For $44.90 you can test whether you really are an eating machine and demolish a grilled bratwurst sausage in a crusty baguette, complete with sauerkraut, chips and German mustard. And if you think that’s easy, you can go to the next level and see if you can take on the Hotdog Challenge which is the 1M long hotdog and a 1L stein of Bavarian Hahndorf Inn Schloss Lager for $68.90. Or if you’re not really feeling the whole German hotdog thing, the Inn has a great menu full of other eats to satisfy your hunger. They’ve got a pretty sweet range of beers on offer too.

There’s nothing like hills footy and an afternoon spent rallying behind the boys is always a great day. The A Grade and Reserves teams from Hahndorf Football Club kick off their 2017 season on 1 April at Hahndorf Oval against Echunga. It’s set to be a cracker of a year after both Hahndorf Magpies teams claimed the 2016 flag. The first bounce for the Reserves boys is at 12.50pm followed by the A Graders at 2.30pm.

If you love a buffet dinner where you can keep piling up your plate, The Old Mill on Main Street does the biggest one in the Adelaide Hills. With lots of different foods to choose from as well as featuring plenty of German favourites, you can’t go past this buffet.
If you plan your boys’ day out on the last Sunday of the month, The Old Mill transforms to Hofbrahaus Sundays for the full experience of a real German beerhouse. Singing, dancing, beers, food and everything German.

After a long day of fun, laughs, eating and drinking, you’ll need a good place to rest your head and wind down… or keep the fun going! The Hahndorf Motor Lodge is a great option with self-contained one or two bedroom apartments and plenty of space to play card games with a few of the boys. They’ve also got a solar-heated under cover pool for a late night swim or an early morning refresher.
