A Wine Lover’s Guide to Hahndorf

Thursday, March 30, 2017

Find your way around Hahndorf’s wineries with this brief guide on all things wine.

The Adelaide Hills has long been known for its cool climate award-winning artisan winemakers and bottles full of personality. Hahndorf is, of course, at the heart of this wine-loving area – the closest wine region to an international airport in the world!

With over 90 Adelaide Hills wine labels and 50 cellar doors in the Adelaide Hills region, South Australians consider themselves incredibly lucky. Beautiful Hahndorf is home to a number of these wonderful wineries and vineyards, all producing stellar wines by hand and practising their art with pure passion.

Find out more about our local cellar doors here.

Adelaide Hills Wine Centre

Uncover some of the best-kept wine secrets in the Adelaide Hills Wine Centre, where over 60 of the finest winemakers from our region are on show in a historic stable and smokehouse next to the Hahndorf Inn. Taste one from the wine wall, have a chance to meet the maker and match wines to local produce while listening to experts talk you through their extensive collection.

Hahndorf Hill Winery

Larry and Marc of Hahndorf Hill Winery are devoted to producing food-friendly wines using a range of Austrian grape varieties such as Gruner Veltliner, Zweigelt and St Laurent, as well as the cool-climate classics like sauvignon blanc, shiraz and dry rosé. Rated by Wine Business Magazine as one of the top 10 cellar doors in Australia, the team at Hahndorf Hill Winery can cater for small and large groups. Tastings, gourmet platters, cheese plates, coffee, cake and the famous ChocoVino experience are available when the cellar door is open. In 2016, Hahndorf Hill Winery was named the ‘Best Producer of <100 Tonnes’ at the Adelaide Hills Wine Show, and their 2016 White Mischief Gruner Veltliner was named the best in its category.

This 25ha vineyard and on-site cellar door are located mid-way between Hahndorf and Balhannah, offering spectacular views of the Mount Lofty Ranges. Built in 1996, the Nepenthe Group now also features a further 80ha of vines dispersed across the Adelaide Hills, with plenty of room for expansion. When visiting the cellar door, we recommend picking up a bottle of The Good Doctor Pinot Noir, named in memory of Nepenthe patriarch Dr Ed Tweddell, as well as their award-winning Winemaker Select Arneis.

Scott & La Prova

Open on the first weekend of every month (or by appointment), Scott & La Prova is located behind the RockBare cellar door. With Scott featuring a range of traditional wines made from locally sourced grapes, La Prova – or ‘the trial’ and ‘the experiment’ – introduce Italian varietals available in Australia. Tastings are a delightful journey in this cellar door! If you can manage to get your hands on some, their Fiano is unbelievable; a real secret treasure, just like their cellar door.

With their wines only available at the cellar bar, as well as at selected restaurants around the country, you’ll have to visit Lucy’s smiley face to pick up a bottle of your favourite. Somerled’s 2016 Pinot Noir Rosé was recently named the ‘Best Rosé on Show’ at the Adelaide Hills Wine Show.
