This week marks an exciting new chapter in Hahndorf, as the doors reopen to one of the village’s historic buildings, that is now home to Hahndorf Brezelhaus Bakery & Café.
For many locals and visiting regulars, this location holds deep sentimental value. It was, for more than two decades, the warm and welcoming home of Kaffeehaus, run with heart, generosity and exceptional hospitality by the much-loved Heidi and Anna.
After nearly half a century in local hospitality, and more than 20 years running Kaffeehaus, the pair have decided it is time to embrace a well-earned retirement. Throughout that time, Kaffeehaus became far more than a café. It was a place where locals grabbed their morning flat white, where travellers experienced genuine village warmth for the first time, and where friendships were formed over comforting, homemade meals. The story behind it stretches even further back to Heidi’s father, Otto, of the famous Otto’s Bakery—a legacy of hospitality that shaped generations and left a lasting imprint on Hahndorf.
Our community expresses its profound gratitude to Anna, Heidi and their family. Their dedication, kindness and contribution will always remain part of the fabric of our town. While Kaffeehaus will be deeply missed, its spirit lives on in the memories shared by thousands who walked through its doors.
Now enters a new beginning: Hahndorf Brezelhaus Bakery & Café, created by the new custodians of this historic space, who have lovingly renovated the interior and brought it to life with a fresh vision – one that honours tradition while embracing contemporary café culture.
The new Brezelhaus focuses on what truly matters in a village built on craft: freshness, skill and authenticity. Every pretzel, pastry, pie and loaf is baked fresh in-house each day. Guests can expect everything from classic Aussie comfort foods such as pies, pasties and sausage rolls, to German-inspired favourites and hearty rolls made to order. Their menu is crafted for breakfast, brunch, lunch or late-afternoon pick-me-ups, centred around excellent coffee, warm hospitality and food that fuels your day.
